Incredible views in the Rif with the Mediterranean in the background

I have breakfast in the hotel with Marc. We then say our goodbyes as he is off to Merzouga by road. I want to visit Chaouen and then get onto the off road track which starts close to the city.

Sunrise in Chefchaouen

I wander around the streets of the medina of the ‘blue pearl’ as they call the city here.  The roads are very steep, it’s early and the small shops that sell everything are just opening up.  Unlike most places in Morocco, the shop owners are not so persistent, trying to get you in, so I can walk about without being bothered.  The smells are intense – spices, plants, some more agreeable than others.  As the sun comes up it lights up the beautiful lilac-blue colour of the walls and I stop for a coffee in the plaza.

I would like to stay longer and I’m torn between enjoying the moment and going out on the bike.  Every moment I linger will be time lost on the bike, so I decide to leave.  I manage to find my way back through the labyrinth of the medina to the hotel.  I pass through a public wash place where the women are washing clothes in water from a small waterfall.  Something I haven’t seen for a long time.

Later I load the bike up; this is not my strong point and I’m rather slow, I want everything perfect so it doesn’t move, I hope I can improve on this during the rest of the trip.  Finally I leave around 11, much later than planned so I’m not sure how far I’ll manage to travel or where I’ll sleep.

I take a steep track in the outskirts of the town which gives me some beautiful views of Chaouen, I ride into the Rif, an area unknown to me and which I have read is the most dangerous in Morocco.  The track leads to Bab Taza where I take a road for a while.  On the road I keep being offered ‘chocolate’, I guess this is where its dangerous reputation comes from.

After a couple of miles I take a track on the left.  My route is made up of various stages which people have given me and it goes northward, towards the coast, aiming to join up with a track which Sergiwap gave me.  So I’m going to Bou Ahmed, on the north coast, in a rather roundabout way.  From there the road becomes slow and muddy, not helped by the weight of my luggage.  I’m having a great time though; the scenery is beautiful with valleys and small houses here and there, fields of cannabis and lovely views with the Med as a backdrop to the high mountains … I should stop to appreciate the views more, but I just don’t have the time.  Now that I have moved the luggage towards the back of the bike to give me more room, the ride is a delight.  The forks absorb the bumps, the breaks are perfect, the engine pulls, and it’s comfortable; I really think I’ve got the ideal bike.

The Mediterranean in the background

The day flies by, it’s already 5 o’clock, it’s getting dark and I’m starting to get worried.  With the late start, the slow road and the short day, I’m still a long way from Bab Berred, the next village where I could find a bed.  There are no villages around, only isolated houses and I can’t see anywhere I’d feel comfortable to pitch my tent.  High in the mountain it’s very windy and lower down in the valleys there are houses everywhere.

At the end of a deep valley I come across a river.  I move in and notice that it is not only deep but it also has a strong current.  Luckily I’m wearing my Sidi Adventure Gore Tex boots which keep my feet as dry as a bone, I just hope I can keep my balance with the bike so loaded up.  Suddenly I notice a man signing to me not to go through the river, telling me that I would sink.  I don’t really understand what he is saying but he seems to be telling me that there is another way but I fear it involves a long detour.  I can’t see my satnav, it’s dark and I really don’t want to leave my planned route.  I have to take a decision. Falling into the water would be a disaster at this time, but I cannot see an alternative … so I decide to cross.  My adrenalin rises as I manage to cross; from the other side the man is waving encouragingly.  I reply with waves and carry on.

Night is falling, by 6 it is totally dark.  Luckily the extra LED headlights which arrived just before I left, complement the bike’s headlights perfectly, but my progress is slow.  I miss seeing a mud area, and suddenly I find myself on the floor.  No harm done, one of the break handles and one of the hand covers is bent.  I’m also low on petrol.

I’ve been driving for 2 hours without seeing anyone when suddenly I come across a 4X4 ahead of me.  It stops and the driver asks me, in broken French, where I am going.  When I tell him, he says it’s far, the area is dangerous for someone alone at night and I should go home with him.

At another time I wouldn’t have accepted, but I don’t feel I’ve got much choice and the guy looks OK so I decide to accept his invitation.  I follow him for a couple of miles until we reach some buildings.  He stops the Mitsubishi and takes out a large rifle, telling me he has been out hunting.  The door opens, and instead of his wife and kids, seven blokes appear.

They help me with my luggage and open a garage opposite, we put the bike inside and close the doors with a load of enormous padlocks and put the alarm on.  I look at my bike wondering if I will ever see it again …..

Inside the house there are two men who speak Spanish and the man who found me, who seems to be the boss, speaks rusty French, so communication is OK.  The show me to a bathroom and prepare a comfortable room for me.  Clean and changed, I sit down to chat with them.  The ‘cook’ then appears with a live rooster and tells me they are going to eat him in my honour and would I like to watch them kill him?  Mmm … I thank them, but not really, unless they would prefer I took part.  The crowing cockerel falls silent and when I next see him he is in the kitchen, being plucked.  I hope I won’t be next ….

The chef and his helper

The stew takes its time and meanwhile they show me how to make a good tea.  We don’t start dinner until well after midnight so there is plenty of time to show me photos of their families on their phones, their mansion in Tangier complete with luxury cars …. very different from the austere building where we are.  We are soon best mates.  They take out a bag of powder (the very best and purest, they tell me) and they show me how they make the little balls of ‘chocolate’ by heating it with a lighter.  They offer me some, but I decline, explaining I never smoke, shame – I’m sure this would be paradise for some!  They talk about their work quite naturally and openly, as any of us would about ours, which surprises me.  I’m given a crash course in the business, prices, jail sentences in various countries ……….. I can’t believe what I’m hearing.  We talk about everything, politics, religion, customs ……….  I learn more about this country in these couple of hours than all my previous trips put together.

The chicken and chips. Delicious

The situation is strange. On one hand they were extremely hospitable and friendly when I most needed it; this would never happen in the west and I am very, very grateful to them for their hospitality. But at the same I feel deeply uncomfortable; I find their way of making money intolerable, it’s a milieu I want nothing to do with.

When the food arrives it is placed on a dish in the centre of the table. No plates. No knives and forks. Here you eat with your hands and the bits are dropped on the table. Luckily I’m starving, I haven’t eaten all day and I would hate to do anything to make my hosts feel uncomfortable, so I try to fit in with the group. I have to say it was delicious.

DSC_0101 (800x450)

My bed

Finally we all go to sleep, it’s nearly 2 am.  I crawl into my sleeping bag and cover myself with the blankets they’ve lent me.  Outside the wind howls and I’m glad not to be sleeping in my tent!  I I find it difficult to sleep; there’s really no need not to trust my new friends, but I feel worried and the adventures of the day keep flashing through my mind.  What do the other 9 days hold for me?  In fact this is only the beginning …..

Exhausted, I finally fall asleep. Let’s hope I find my bike intact tomorrow ……
